Media Literacy meets ISTE-NETS

2. Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating
contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS·S.
a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that
incorporate digital tools and resources to promote
student learning and creativity
b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments
that enable all students to pursue their individual
curiosities and become active participants in setting
their own educational goals, managing their own
learning, and assessing their own progress

3. Model Digital Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional
in a global and digital society.
a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the
transfer of current knowledge to new technologies
and situations.
c. Communicate relevant information and ideas
effectively to students, parents, and peers using
a variety of digital age media and formats.

Connections

The connections between the Media Literacy and the standards I picked from ISTE-NETS is:
Media Literacy adapts to the relevant learning experiences and that it does use and incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning. Teachers can assign projects to where the student will have to go online, make a video, use music, or power point to create their project. Most students know how to use all of those and have a computer at the house to be able to do that. By having the student do the project using the internet, making a video or music they are learning and having fun with it. The teacher can also use Media Literacy to help students with different learning abilities.

By having the teacher make a power point to help with the lesson the teacher is teaching or if they need to fundraise for either a trip, new uniforms (for a team or the band), or for a teacher meeting, that teacher is showing fluency in the technology systems and are transferring their current knowledge to the new and adapting technology. If they are doing a fundraiser and trying to get the parents involved, when that teacher shows them their use of Media Literacy to help with the presentation they are communicating relevant information and ideas to them.

Importance

Media Literacy is very important in this technological age because there are so many learning video’s online. The students of today’s age know how to use all the technology and it will help them understand something that maybe a book won’t be to go into that much detail. They can go online and find out more on that subject, which will make them more engaged in the class room. I know that when I become a teacher I plan on using Media Literacy in my classroom.
